Celebrate freedom on the 4th

By Bill Jourdain

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Benjamin Franklin is credited for that quote and I believe it’s as applicable now as it was in his time. For many American citizens, we have come to take for granted our rights and freedoms and have come to enjoy the Fourth of July weekend as only a time of fireworks and barbecues. If we look back in our not so distant history, we are reminded of the struggle and courage it takes to achieve freedom, and the hope and promise that America holds for its people. It also reminds us of why we celebrate the Fourth of July.

On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from England — the day democracy was born. And now, 232 years later, thousands of people leave their home countries each day to come to the land of the free so they can live their own American Dream.

Let us remember that we live in a diverse nation made up of dynamic individuals. Each year, every family celebrates America’s birthday and essence with poolside barbecues, beach vacations, boating on the lake or with family ball games. There is a sort of tradition to this special holiday that we all relate to and our senses react to — perhaps it’s the sweltering summer heat, or the smell of charcoal on the grill, chlorine and fresh cut grass. Maybe it’s watching the fireworks display when the night air is cool and your skin’s still warm from the day in the sun.

However you choose to spend your holiday, remember that the luxury lies in being able to make that choice. Over the past 232 years, many wars have been fought to defend our freedom of choice. So remember this year during your holiday activities, make an effort to celebrate with all of the valor, zeal and fervency that our flag represents.

Celebrate for this country and other nations we have helped, for those individuals who have lost their lives defending our freedom, for our troops who are returning home, and for those who continue to serve. That’s a lot of celebrating, so you better get started. May you each have a safe and happy Independence Day. Happy Birthday, America!

Bill Jourdain is chairman of the Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce executive board.
