Georgia’s Cancer researchers to collaborate at May Symposium

Georgia’s war on cancer is being fought in the laboratory; at the university; in the doctor’s office; and the hospital. The foot soldiers are medical doctors; doctors of psychology; scientists and clinicians; oncologists, nurses and cancer survivors. But they can only win the battle if they fight together.

To that end, the Georgia Cancer Coalition, whose goal is to improve cancer control in the State of Georgia, is sponsoring the 2008 Cancer Research Symposium, entitled “The Promise of Collaboration.” The conference is May 11 – 13, 2008, at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge in Reynolds Plantation.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society and a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar. Sessions include an overview on cancer discoveries and developments in Georgia; updates on university-affiliated cancer center activities; successful collaborations in translational science, population science, and clinical research; and a testimonial from a scientist who is also a cancer survivor. The newest round of 2008 Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Clinicians and Scientists will be named on Tuesday, May 12.

“With the focus on relationship building, we’ve created several opportunities for participants and speakers to exchange ideas and perspectives in order to advance collaboration,” says Bill Todd, President and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
