Alzheimer's luncheon

On May 30 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Calhoun, the Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a ‘lunch and learn’ for caregivers caring for a loved one with Down syndrome who is 35 years of age or older in Northwest Georgia. There is a high percentage of person’s with Down syndrome over age 35 who show clinical signs of Alzheimer’s type dementia. The percentage increases with age. The incidence of Alzheimer’s disease in the Down syndrome population is estimated to be three to five times greater than the general population. (information according to the National Down Syndrome Society)

The free Lunch and Learn will give family members and caregivers the first chance ever to share their concerns about caring for a person with Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease; to learn about how the Alzheimer’s Association, the Coosa Valley RDC/Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging and the Region 1 MHDDAD Intake & Evaluation office can support them; and to tell these organizations what assistance they need in their role as caregiver.
