Stop smoking clinic instructor training

Submitted by the North Georgia Health District

American Lung Association Freedom from Smoking Stop Smoking Clinic instructor training will be July 10 and 11 in the Appalachian Community Bank Community Room in Chatsworth.

Freedom From Smoking is the American Lung Association’s premier program to help tobacco users break their addiction. This eight-session clinic is a comprehensive program using behavior modification and long-term coping mechanisms. The program:

• Takes a step-by step approach to teaching smokers to quit.

• Covers stress management, weight control issues and social situations.

• Includes contact with quitters for a month after Quit Day.

• Is facilitated by certified Instructors who understand the issues of quitting.

• Offers incentives for smokers to quit for good.

The philosophy of Freedom From Smoking is based on the premise that smoking is a learned habit. Smokers teach themselves to smoke and practice the experience until it becomes an “automatic” behavior. Quitting with Freedom From Smoking employs a process in which smokers (and spit tobacco users) consciously “un-learn” the automatic behavior, substituting healthy new alternatives.

As a Freedom From Smoking instructor, you can provide tobacco users with a comprehensive behavior modification program that uses group interaction and support. This is a great program to offer worksites, organizations or the general public.

The Freedom From Smoking instructor clinic is a day and a half training. The first day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. The second day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon. Continental breakfast is provided both days and lunch is provided on day one. The $150 fee includes a manual, interactive instruction and opportunities to practice newly acquired adult education techniques.

A limited number of facilitator scholarships will be available to those who agree to teach a class during the next year. Scholarships will require an agreement with the North Georgia Health District. To inquire about available scholarships, please contact the North Georgia Health District at (706) 272-2406. For general information about becoming an instructor or to register for the class, please call (706) 280-1497.
