VARNELL — The Varnell City Council named Lyle Grant police chief at its meeting Tuesday night.
Grant, who has been acting chief since the resignation of Tim Henderson, has been with the department since August, 2003.
The action came after city leaders received a letter from the Georgia Department of Labor, which ruled Henderson had officially resigned his post after his arrest in January on charges of theft and violation of his oath of office. Henderson has not been indicted on the charges.
Henderson had disputed whether he had resigned after telling The Daily Citizen and other media outlets he was stepping down as chief.
Mayor Pro Tem David Owens said the council has complete confidence in Grant.
“He has conducted himself in a professional, courteous and conscientious manner,” Owens said.
