The Whitfield County Republican Party will host a “Get to Know the Candidates” forum involving GOP Board of Commissioners District 2 candidates Harold Brooker and Karen Horne tonight at 7 in the administrative building at 214 W. King St. in Dalton. The meeting is open to the public.

Soul Food is a free dinner ministry of First Baptist Church of Dalton serving all in the community who need a hot, nutritious meal. The church will offer this event today in the fellowship hall on the corner of Waugh Street and Thornton Avenue.

Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

There will be an organizational meeting for the Scottish Society of Northwest Georgia tonight at 7 at the Western Sizzlin steakhouse on Cleveland Highway in Dalton.

The Highland Rivers Community Service Board will meet this morning at 10 in the Harris Arts Center at 212 S. Wall St. in Calhoun. The meeting is open to the public. The Executive, Finance and Corporate Compliance Committees will meet at 9 a.m.

Highland Rivers Center offers treatment and support services for adults and children affected by mental health disorders, developmental disabilities and addictive diseases. The agency serves Bartow, Cherokee, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk and Whitfield counties, and provides addictive disease services to citizens of Haralson County.

ATLANTA — James Wickes, an English teacher at Dalton High School, has been named a 2008 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Wickes is one of 250 educators across the country chosen to receive the honor of “Educator of Distinction,” an award that recognizes outstanding teachers dedicated to providing education with an enhanced purpose.

“The Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction Award represents the noble and heartfelt dedication of the educators who win it. These teachers help shape the future of America by encouraging its future leaders,” said J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Wickes receives a commemorative crystal gift from the Foundation and a plaque inscribed with a personal dedication written by Jose Trejo, a 2008 Coca-Cola Scholar and a senior from Dalton High School, who nominated Wickes.

Tickets are on sale for Dalton Little Theatre’s next production, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.”

One Christmas Eve, young Edwin Drood disappears and everyone becomes a suspect in his murder. Based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens, it is up to the audience to piece together the clues and decide who did it.

Show times are July 3-5 and July 10-12 at 8 p.m. and July 6 and 13 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $12 for adults; $10 for DLT members, seniors and students; and $8 for children under 12. Season tickets are accepted for this show. Tickets are $10 each for groups of 15 or more.

Reserved seats are available by prepayment by check or credit card. General admission seats, based on availability, may be purchased at the door.
