Sen. Thomas named to health care committee

State Sen. Don Thomas, R-Dalton, has been appointed to the Georgia Senate Study Committee on Healthcare Transformation by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. The committee is charged with creating policy to help make health care and health insurance more accessible and affordable for every Georgian.

“We haven’t met yet, so we really haven’t laid out our (agenda) yet,” said Thomas on Thursday.

Thomas said he expects the committee will have its first meeting in July and will have five meetings through November.

“Then we’ll have a report ready to go to the governor and the lieutenant governor before the legislative session starts in January,” he said.

Thomas serves as chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee and is also a member of the Education and Youth and Ethics committees. He was elected to the Senate in 1996.

“Sen. Thomas will be a valuable asset to the health care study committee,” said Cagle in a press release. “He is dedicated to his constituents and has worked diligently in the state Senate. I look forward to learning more about the findings of the Healthcare Transformation Study Committee.”

“Sen. Thomas has shown that he’s very knowledgeable when it comes to health care reform,” said Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson, R-Savannah. “He has a solid track record in the Senate and I am confident that he will be an asset to this important study committee.”
