A Dalton man who robbed a woman of her bank deposit bag Monday afternoon in Chatsworth was apprehended soon after by officers with the Chatsworth Police Department and Murray County Sheriff’s Office, officials said.
Matthew Marchman, 20, of 314 N. Thornton Ave., Apt. 14, was charged with robbery for allegedly grabbing the money bag of the manager of the Kangaroo Express convenience store on Highway 76 around 12:30 p.m. The woman, who was not named by Detective Jim Whitehead of the Chatsworth Police Department, was trying to make a deposit at the First National Bank of Chatsworth branch inside the Bi-Lo grocery store at 502 G.I. Maddox Parkway.
“The woman had not made it into the store when (Marchman) grabbed the deposit bag and fled into the woods,” said Whitehead. “She maintained a visual (contact) on him, and was able to give a description to officers. They fanned out into the woods, and then a suspect matching his description was seen walking down Long Avenue behind the store.”
Whitehead said the stolen money was found in the woods and Marchman was arrested. Whitehead would not say how much money was recovered.
Marchman was arrested in Whitfield County in June of 2006 and charged with entering an auto with intent to commit a felony and theft by taking. He is in the Murray County Jail and is expected to have a bond hearing on Wednesday, a jail spokeswoman said.
