Cause of wreck still not known

Mark Millican

The cause of a fatal wreck on Ga. Highway 201 Tuesday morning was still undetermined Wednesday afternoon because the report was not yet finished, said an operator with the Georgia State Patrol.

Penny Bagby, 50, of Rocky Face, was traveling north when her 2004 Acura crossed the center line near the intersection with Dunnagan Road and crashed head-on into a dump truck carrying asphalt. The wreck happened around 9:40 a.m. Bagby was pronounced dead at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga shortly after 1 p.m., said Whitfield County coroner Bobbie Dixon.

The driver of the dump truck was Billy Hughes, who was driving for Randy Patty Trucking of Lyerly. The state patrol operator said Hughes was injured, but he did not know the extent of his injuries. A spokeswoman with Whitfield 911 said it appeared Hughes was not taken to a hospital.

A phone number for Hughes could not be found. An employee at Randy Patty Trucking said she “did not know anything yet” about Hughes and did not want to give out any more information.
