New data shows that cities in area counties along I-75 were once again the fastest growing from 2007 to 2008.
City-level census data released this week shows Dalton and Cartersville each gained more than 500 residents during that time, and Calhoun grew by about 350. Rome, meanwhile, grew by just 154 residents.
Rome’s population in 2008 was 36,041. Floyd County — with a population of 95,980 — gained just 616 residents between 2007 and 2008. Meanwhile, Bartow grew by about 2,300, Whitfield by 1,200 and Gordon by nearly 1,000. All three have populations lower than Floyd’s.
However, Bartow county’s growth has pushed its population to within about 1,000 of Floyd County’s population. Between the 2000 census and 2008, Bartow gained almost 19,000 residents. In that time, Floyd gained about 5,400.
The data also shows Atlanta was one of the nation’s fastest growing cities with populations over 100,000, as measured by the number of new individuals. The bureau found the population shifted from 520,368 persons in July 2007 to 537,958 in July 2008.
The data showed the population of New Orleans grew 8.2 percent in 2008, faster than any other large city in the nation. New York led the nation’s cities in numerical increase during the period, adding more than 53,000 residents.
