Briefs for Monday, July 21

The Dalton City Council meets tonight at 6 at City Hall. Council members are expected to vote on a contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation to pave 3.37 miles of city streets.

Those streets include all or parts of Allendale Drive, Brighten Way, Elk Street, Frances Street, Hawthorne Street, Liddell Street, Ludie Street, Maddox Street, McFarland Avenue, McFarland Road, Northpark Drive, Park Street, Ravine Way, South Drive, Spruce Street, Stillwood Drive and Strain Street.

The council is also scheduled to receive a petition from the Dalton Hospitality Association to reduce alcohol beverage license fees and to hear an update on the city health plan. The council is scheduled to hold the second reading of and vote on an ordinance that will consolidate the false alarm response policies of the fire and police departments.

The council will hold an executive session at 5 p.m. to discuss personnel. Council members say they expect to discuss the appointment of an interim city administrator. Butch Sanders resigned from the $103,209-a-year city administrator position on Thursday.



The Board of Water, Light & Sinking Fund Commissioners, which governs Dalton Utilities, meets today at noon in the utility’s board room.

The board is scheduled to hear the CEO’s report and to hold an executive session. There will be time for public comments and questions.



The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners will host a work session and meeting tonight beginning at 6. The meetings will be in administrative building No. 2 at 214 W. King St. They are open to the public.



An organization called Whitfield County for Obama will hold a meeting tonight at 6 at the Dalton Community Center on Fredrick Street.

This is a meeting for community participation. Topics discussed will be open to those attending.

Visions of Hope for Healthy Youth will present Internet Safety for Youth: Practical Tips for Parents tonight from 6 to 8 at the Boys and Girls Club at Gladden Middle School.

Visions of Hope is a group of citizens concerned about the health and well-being of youth in Whitfield and Murray counties.
