County wants input on private drives

GeoComm representatives have been out in the field for several months collecting address information for the Whitfield County Address Location Project. The purpose of the project is to locate every structure in Whitfield County to aid in emergency response and correct potential errors. GeoComm focused on five errors, one of those being drives with three or more structures on it. The representatives identified 550 drives which need to be assigned unique road names to meet the National Emergency Number Association’s (NENA) guidelines for 9-1-1 addressing. The naming of the private drives with three or more structures will greatly aid with emergency response.

Here’s where Whitfield County residents come in:

Whitfield County is offering those addressed property owners located along the private drives an opportunity to suggest a name for their private drive. Residents who live on a private driveway that is shared with between three structures will most likely need a name according to the NENA standards. A map showing the roads that need to be named will be posted in the first floor hallway of the Administration Building #1, located at 301 West Crawford Street. Residents can come during work hours Wednesday through Friday, July 23-25, with staff available. The map will also be staffed from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23 and from 8 a.m. - noon on Saturday, July 26.

There will be a list of acceptable road names for residents to select from if needed. Please note that all roads where no suggestions are obtained will be named by Whitfield County staff. Road names must be in compliance with the County’s addressing ordinance. All private drives receiving a new name will not become a public road or be maintained by the County.
