The death of local homebuilder Danny Witt is still a mystery to Whitfield County sheriff’s deputies, who are waiting on evidence from the state crime lab.
“We really don’t know when we will get that evidence back,” said Maj. John Gibson, citing budget cuts at the lab that have created a backlog.
Being evaluated is physical evidence from the scene. Witt, 59, of 2716 Osprey Drive, was found shot in the abdomen in his truck at a home he was building at 3030 Lamory Lane in Rocky Face shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
The case is being investigated as a homicide, which is standard procedure, Gibson said. He said on Wednesday that detectives were interviewing family members.
“We are aware that he has been involved in ongoing disputes with some of the relatives,” Gibson said.
Gibson said Witt was under investigation for credit card fraud.
“He stole his brother’s identity and maxed out his credit cards,” Gibson said. That investigation was initiated recently, he said.
