Crandall man arrested for arson

Mark Millican

A Crandall man was arrested on Wednesday for starting a fire on property he was leasing.

Hollis Edward Black, 66, of 6669 Highway 411 N., was charged by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office with arson in the first degree and possession of firearms by a convicted felon on first offender probation.

“He leases a flea market on 411 across from the post office and got into it with his landlord,” said Chief Deputy Ray Sitton. “He poured kerosene on the floor, lit a match and walked out. He confessed to what he did to a detective.”

When officers searched Black’s residence they found firearms and learned he was a felon. Black was arrested in 1995 for disorderly conduct and served 42 days in jail for simple battery in 1998, according to a jail spokeswoman. He remained in jail Thursday night and is expected to have a first appearance before a Magistrate Court judge today.
