Is farm living the life for you?
Well, you just might get a taste of farm living in the city as Dalton prepares to open its first community garden.
Brenda Jackson, Whitfield County agriculture and natural resources agent, says about 11 people attended an organizational meeting last week. That’s enough to move ahead.
“We’ve pretty much decided on Lakeshore Park as the location. Everybody is going to individually check out the location itself,” she said. “Ronnie Nix, at Dalton parks and recreation, is going to have some of his guys put out stakes to lay out the dimensions.”
She says the garden will total about 300 square feet.
After everyone has a chance to look at the site, Jackson will arrange another meeting to finalize the plans. One thing they will have to decide is whether to have one large communal garden or to give each gardener an individual plot.
Jackson says she has recommended a mixture of individual plots and a larger garden everyone will tend.
“The produce from that bigger garden can be split up among the group or donated to a local food organization,” she said.
