What: The Nutcracker ballet is an annual holiday tradition. “Nutcracker 2009” is a regional, two-hour production of the famous holiday ballet performed in Dalton. The ballet is based on a book titled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” written by E.T.A. Hoffman. With a score by Tchaikovsky, the first showing of “Nutcracker” took place in 1892 in Russia. Since it reached American soil in the 1940s, it has been performed throughout the country during the holiday season, by many local, regional and professional dance companies.

Why: The Nutcracker ballet has become an annual holiday event in northwest Georgia. This is the 17th year this holiday classic has been performed in Dalton. This past year, the cast performed to sold-out audiences each time. Due to demand for tickets, a seventh performance was added last year on Sunday at 5 p.m. and will continue this year as well.

Sets, costumes, choreography and artwork are designed by local and regional artists especially for this production. It is an excellent example of hundreds of people in the community working together to produce a quality performing arts event known throughout the region.

How: More than 300 local performers, guest professional dancers and hundreds of community volunteers come together to make Dalton’s annual “Nutcracker” a production to remember.

Who: “Nutcracker 2009” is a production of the Dalton Arts Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Donations and ticket sales from “Nutcracker” are used to produce the annual event as well as provide ticket subsidies for local children who may not have other opportunities to attend performing arts events.

In addition, the Dalton Arts Projects provides a year-round calendar of performing arts opportunities for underserved youth in the community. All donations to the Dalton Arts Project are tax-deductible.
