Column: Luger will tell his story

By Jamie Jones
jamiejones@daltoncitizen.com

Lex Luger has endured a tough past few years. Run-ins with the law. Drug abuse. Partial paralysis. Now after becoming a born-again Christian, Luger wants to tell his story.

Luger, a former NWA world heavyweight champion, will be the guest speaker at Carolyn Baptist Church on Sunday, July 27 at 6 p.m. The church is at 2305 Cleveland Highway. The public is invited. For information, call the church (706) 259-8142.

Luger, once one of wrestling’s top draws, suffered a severe spinal injury last year, which he believes was the result of the relentless pounding of three decades on the football field and in the wrestling ring. He is now undergoing rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

The Local Corner: Friday night, it’s “buy one ticket get one free” night.

In matches last Friday night: Scott Bear defeated Silas Quaz; Ray Fury downed Zero; Pee Wee topped Paul Dryver; Jake Murphy took out Silas Quaz by disqualification; UGM vs. Billy Jester and K.T. Hamill went to a time limit draw; Damien James Black came out running down the injured Alex Summers and the TWA locker room. Out comes Summers to answer the challenge with his arm in a sling, followed by wrestlers in the TWA locker room. Black said he could beat every one of them. So the main event was a gauntlet battle royal for the main event but Summers had one more special surprise: the return of JL Cool. The finals came down to Cool and Black and the match was declared a no contest when both men took a standing 10 count on the floor.

In matches last Saturday night: Diaz Jr. defeated Matt Vice; Joey Idol and the Klown wrestled to a no contest when the Sheepherders entered the ring; Fury, Jester and Pee Wee went to a no contest when all three men pinned each other; Evan Turner defeated Cool; The Sheepherders topped the Rough House Boys to retain the tag titles; Black defeated Joey Idol with the help of Logan Chase III.

TWA runs Fridays at 8 p.m. in the TWA Arena off Reed Road in north Whitfield County, about three miles north of the bypass. The Action Zone runs Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are free. Any military member with proper identification will be admitted free.

Trivia Teaser: Michael Hayes was also known by the this name in WWE.

Check back next week for the answer.

Last week’s question: USWA was formed in 1989 after which two organizations merged?

WCCW (Texas) and the CWA (Memphis).

Jamie Jones will give all non-believers in wrestling the Richard Belser treatment.
