Northwest wins four at SE play day

Northwest Whitfield turned in the best results among area teams in a volleyball play day at Southeast on Saturday, with the Lady Bruins going 4-1.
Northwest scored victories against the host Lady Raiders (25-17, 25-21), Lithia Springs (25-14, 24-26, 25-16), Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (25-19, 25-13) and Dalton (25-22, 25-15), but fell to Tennessee’s Soddy-Daisy (19-25, 25-22, 19-25).
On the day, Christy Robinson finished with 45 kills, seven aces and five blocks, Cassie Cochran added 22 kills, three aces and five blocks, Quaniesha McCurty had 22 kills and five blocks and Kelsey Kirk had 16 kills, four aces and five blocks for the Lady Bruins (8-3).
Morgan Ridley had 16 kills and two blocks, while Kelsey Minor had four kills, an ace and 98 assists. Adrienne Orem had 34 digs, five aces and was 59 of 61 on serves, while Alex Warren had 28 digs and an ace.
Dalton went 2-3, topping Lithia Springs (25-23, 25-17) and Southeast (25-17, 21-25, 25-17), but falling to Soddy-Daisy (25-23, 15-25, 19-25) and LFO (18-25, 17-25).
The Lady Catamounts (7-5) were led by Emily Broadrick’s 42-kill, 10-block effort. Emily Clark finished with 73 assists and three blocks, while Emily Harbin had 21 kills and three blocks and Kate Houston 10 kills and a block.
Southeast’s lone victory on the day came against Lithia Springs (25-21, 25-17), with the Lady Raiders also falling to LFO (22-25, 25-21, 20-25) and Soddy-Daisy (25-13, 25-15).
The Lady Raiders (2-5) were led by Casey Crump, who finished with 88 assists and 18 digs. Cassey Adams had 37 kills and 30 digs, Morgan Johnson 32 kills and 12 aces, Lynsey King 35 kills and Shelby McFarland 14 kills.
Varsity softball
Northwest Whitfield dropped three games in the LFO Invitational at Jack Mattox Recreational Complex in Ringgold, remaining winless in seven outings to start the season.
The Lady Bruins fell 11-10 to Cass with the international tiebreaker in place after the game stretched past the tourney’s 90-minute time limit during the sixth inning. Callie Thomas went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples, Casey Griffin was 3-for-5 and Taylor Staten was 2-for-3 with a triple as Northwest collected 13 hits as a team.
Griffin took the loss, pitching seven innings and allowing 11 runs on 12 hits with a strikeout and no walks.
In an 8-0 loss to Eastside, the Lady Bruins were no-hit. Loren Shook took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with a strikeout in four innings of work.
In a 7-3 loss to Trion, Thomas was 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and drove in three runs while collecting the Lady Bruins’ only hits in the game. Allison Manis started, but was relieved before recording an out in the first inning — she allowed four runs on three hits and a pair of walks. Shook took over, pitched five innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two.
