Bruins run well despite weather

Despite miserable weather conditions, Northwest Whitfield turned in a solid performance Saturday at the Chickamauga Dam in a Chattanooga Cross Country League meet, with the Bruins finishing 10th among a 31-team field and the Lady Bruins taking seventh out of 21 teams.

McCallie won in boys competition and St. Pius in girls.

“It poured the entire time,” Northwest coach Tom Sell said. “But I was pleased with the boys because there wasn’t a single senior out there. And the girls ran great, very strong.”

The Bruins were led on the 5-kilometer course by Jordan Jones, who finished 26th overall with a time of 18:55, Brody Cook (30th, 19:10), Brandon Harris (19:51, 52nd), Nathan Ward (20:28, 86th), Blake Phillips (113th, 21:08), Parker Cook (115th, 21:11) and Connor Wilson (126th, 21:26).

Shelby Wilson (21st, 22:53) led the Lady Bruins, followed by Jenna Williams (42nd, 23:59), Maggie Kalafut (53rd, 24:24), Kayla Griffin (70th, 24:50), Emily Musto (82nd, 25:30), Natalie Williams (84th, 25:35) and Kaitlyn Wade (113th, 27:07).

• At the Paulding County Invitational, Dalton’s boys took third while the Lady Catamounts took fourth in a 13-team meet held at Taylor Farm Park in Powder Springs.

Andrew Bruner led the Catamounts (fifth, 17:58), while Chris Pineda (11th, 18:15), Fernando Morales (12th, 18:16), Jonathan Hernandez (18:36), Preston Pound (18:57), Grant Snyder (19:44) and Andrew O’Neill (23:50) also competed.

The Lady Cats were led by Carina Nieto (second, 21:00), with Meral Henton (third, 21:11), Bekah Houston (10th, 21:57), Paxton Plunkett (23rd, 23:15), Reagan Fromm (24:35), Katarina Yi (24:40) and Melanie Lipscomb (26:25) also competing.

In junior varsity action, Jillian Lidderdale finished 11th with a time of 24:52.

Varsity volleyball

• Southeast finished third in pool play at the Choo Choo Tournament in Chattanooga by going 2-3, beating East Hamilton (25-21, 19-25, 25-8) and Harpeth Hall (16-25, 25-22, 25-9) and losing to Boyd Buchanan (25-21, 25-18), Red Bank (25-16, 25-10) and Chattanooga Christian (28-26, 25-17).

The Lady Radiers, who are 11-11 on the season, were led by Lynsey King (41 digs, five aces), Cassey Adams (36 digs, 21 kills), Casey Crump (34 assists), Hannah Graham (25 assists), Shelby McFarland (19 kills) and Morgan Johnson (18 kills).

• Christian Heritage took second place in the silver division at the Augusta Prep tournament and finished 3-4 overall in the two-day event.

On Friday, the Lady Lions beat George Walton Academy (25-27, 25-20, 15-13) and Arlington Christian (25-15, 25-9) while losing to Pinewood (25-19, 25-15).

On Saturday, they beat George Walton (25-21, 25-17) and lost to Shiloh Hills (17-25, 25-15, 16-12) and South Carolina’s South Aiken twice (25-15, 25-15 and 25-23, 25-17).

The Lady Lions remain at 8-1 for the season, because the event did not count toward the team’s GISA record.

MS football

• New Hope eighth 6, Gladden 0: Hunter Williams threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Levi Wilson and also reeled in two interceptions on defense for the Kodiaks (1-0).

• New Hope seventh 23, Gladden 0: Jamon Horn’s run of 52 yards, Jackson Shepard’s run of 43 yards and Cesar Orejel’s run of 14 yards accounted for the Kodiaks’ (1-0) scoring, along with two Orejel 2-point conversion runs.
