Northwest rips Rome in softball

Northwest Whitfield’s softball team needed just five innings to pick up an 11-0 win at Rome on Monday, setting up a showdown for first place in the Sub-region 7A-4A standings tonight in Tunnel Hill.
Freshman ace Emily Boyd allowed two hits, struck out 11 and walked none as she picked up the mercy-rule victory for the Lady Bruins (10-11, 4-0 in 7A-4A), who host Cass — also unbeaten in sub-region play, Northwest coach Shane Ramsey said — for senior night at 7 p.m. The game will be key in setting the top seeds for the Region 7-4A tournament, which starts Saturday at Hobgood Park in Cartersville.
At the plate against Rome, Mykeah Johnson — another freshman standout — was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while McKinley Poteet was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Casey Griffin added a hit and three RBIs and Halen Weeks had a hit and two RBIs.
• Woodland-Bartow 7, Dalton 5 (eight innings): Shelby Whitfield hit her fifth home run of the season, which drove in two runs, and Amanda Rector finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Lady Catamounts (5-9, 0-3 Sub-region 7A-4A). Jessica Gallmon went the distance, giving up just two earned runs while striking out 12, walking four and giving up eight hits. The Lady Cats’ defense committed three errors.
• Sequoyah 4, Murray County 0: Courtney Welch and Courtney Goforth each had a hit for Murray County (9-16, 1-5 Sub-region 7A-4A). Welch also had two stolen bases, giving her 33 for the season. The Lady Indians’ Sarah Kilgore took the loss, allowing four four runs on seven hits. She struck out three.
Varsity volleyball
• Southeast dropped its first game to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 25-15 and found themselves trailing the third and deciding game 24-21, but still managed to win the Sub-region 6A-3A match, taking the second game 25-13 and the final 26-24.
Shelby McFarland finished with 13 kills for the Lady Raiders (13-12, 1-1), Cassey Adams had 13 kills, 10 digs and four aces, Morgan Johnson chipped in 15 digs and eight kills, Lynsey King added 19 digs, Hannah Graham contributed 20 assists, Casey Crump had 15 assists and 15 digs and Emelee Oliver finished with six kills.
• Murray County was swept in a tri-match, losing to host Gordon Lee 25-7, 25-17 and LaFayette 25-11, 25-11.
Mirely Cabral led the Lady Indians (9-11) with 17 assists and two digs, Michaela Hill added three aces, three kills and six digs and Yazmin Ramos chipped in four blocks and an ace.
9th football
• Northwest Whitfield 15, Cass 7: Silas Ledford scored on a 1-yard run and connected with Blake Heard on a 43-yard scoring pass play for the Bruins (3-0).
That same combination hooked up for a two-point conversion and William Zamora kicked an extra point for the Bruins in the victory.
Case Mathis had five tackles and an interception for the Bruins’ defense. Wyatt Miracle had 4 1/2 tackles and Brandon Smith had three.
JV volleyball
• The Lady Raiders (9-4) lost to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 26-24, 25-20. Megan Collins had 10 kills, Emily Edgeman had 17 digs and three aces, Lindsay Cox had seven kills and two aces and Linda Duarte had five assists and two aces.
MS softball
• New Hope 15, Eastbrook 0: Brileigh Baggett threw a three-inning no-hitter, striking out eight, to pace the Lady Kodiaks (5-0). Baggett walked four and hit a batter.
Emily Banks went had two hits, including a double, and drove in five runs for New Hope. Gracie Cansler had two hits and two RBIs.
• Westside 11, North Whitfield 2: Haley Reece had three hits and Gabbi Helton and Chelsea Quarles had two hits apiece for Westside (2-2). Kayla Franks was the winning pitcher, striking out four while surrendering three hits and a walk.
• Dalton 6, Cleveland (Tenn.) 5: Kylee Harris and Destiny Woods finished 3 for 4 and Kristin Pender and McKinzee Brown went 2 for 3 as the Lady Cougars (1-7) won for the first time this season. Carson Roberts got the win.
