Lady Bruins fall

Northwest Whitfield’s Lady Bruins fell just short of opening the season with a win at Parkview High’s tournament on Saturday in Lilburn.

Loganville beat Northwest in overtime, 50-45, although the Lady Bruins did rally from a poor first-half performance.

“We started off real slow,” said coach Margaret Stockburger, whose Lady Bruins — they’re ranked No. 3 in the GaSports.com Class 4A coaches poll, while Loganville of Region 8-4A is not ranked — scored just three points in the first quarter and trailed 15-11 at halftime.

“We came out in the second half and played better because we started making some shots and forcing some turnovers. We picked up the intensity, but basketball is four quarters so we’ve got to put together a complete game.”

Loganville outscored the Lady Bruins 7-2 in the overtime period after a 3-pointer from Northwest’s Jordi Cook with 30 seconds left ended regulation in a 43-43 tie.

Northwest was led by Quaneisha McCurty’s 19 points and 10 rebounds, Christy Robinson’s eight points and seven rebounds and Emily Trew’s four steals and four assists.

The Lady Bruins are looking to make a push deep into the state playoffs after reaching the Class 4A quarterfinals last season, where they were eliminated by eventual state champions Southwest DeKalb. They return all but two players — starting guard Callie Thomas and reserve post Jasmine Thornton — from that squad.

Northwest next plays Alpharetta at 6 p.m. in the tournament, which features a round-robin format.

• Pinecrest Academy girls 67, Christian Heritage 55: The Lady Lions (2-1) were led by Maggie Peeples’ 18 points and four rebounds and Caty Nagel’s 16 points and six rebounds.

Pinecrest’s Margaret Cassandra led all scorers with 23 points.

• Pinecrest Academy boys 60, Christian Heritage 51: The Lions (1-2) were led by Will Clark’s 21 points, while Landon McClure added 12 points and Terrell Wilson chipped in 11.

Pinecrest’s Jonathan Oshinski led all scorers with 24 points.

Varsity wrestling

• At the Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe duals, Murray County went 4-1 and Southeast Whitfield 2-3.

Murray County’s Indians beat Ringgold (72-6), Heritage (59-15), Southeast (51-24) and LFO (81-0) but lost to Dade County (43-33).

Southeast’s Raiders defeated LFO (44-30) and Ringgold (57-21) while losing to Heritage (42-36), Dade County (37-34) and Murray County.

The Indians had five wrestlers finish 5-0: David Thornbury (189 pounds, four pins), Zac Dills (215, three pins), Dalton Lane (145, four pins), Josh Webb (112, four pins) and Kolby Youell (152, two pins). Angel Langley (285, one pin) went 2-0.

The Raiders had four wrestlers go unbeaten, including Mario Rodriguez (119, five pins), Nick Didonato (140), Jeremy White (103/112) and Tanner Phipps (171). Andy Pichardo (152) went 4-1, with his only loss to Youell.

• North Murray went 3-1 at the New Schools Duals at Lambert High in Suwanee, beating Mountainview (51-29), Johns Creek (66-18) and Walnut Grove (42-36) while losing to host Lambert (51-22).

Austin Carter (189 pounds) went 4-0 and three wrestlers — Tas Brown (152), Zach Penland (119) and Jack Abernathy (145) — went 3-1.

JV basketball

• North Murray boys 77, Southeast 41: In the Southeast junior varsity tournament championship game, Tyler Duckett’s 16 points, five rebounds and three steals led the Mountaineers (2-0).

Zach Bess added 14 points and eight rebounds and Cody Malone chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and four steals for North Murray.

“We’ve got an opportunity to set the bar for the future of our program,” Mountaineers coach Eric Bishop said. “These guys are determined to set it high.”

• North Murray girls 48, Gilmer 46 (OT): Despite four of their five starters being freshmen, the Lady Mountaineers (2-0) rallied after trailing 14-3 at the end of the first quarter and scored four of their six overtime points from the free throw line to win Southeast’s JV tourney.

North Murray was led by Alex Hedges’ 16 points and 16 rebounds, Megan Bramblett’s 12 points, Abigail Bradley’s nine points and Meagan Spivey’s eight rebounds.

MS basketball

• Rome eighth boys 49, Bagley 46 (OT): The Braves (3-3) were led by Jordan Keener’s 13 points and Omar Romero’s 11 points.

• Rome seventh boys 58, Bagley 48: The Braves (1-4) were led by Alex Viars’ 14 points and Lucas Sexton’s 13 points.

• Bagley eighth girls 44, Rome 28: The Lady Braves (4-2) were led by Grace Phillips’ 15 points and Megan Pittman’s 14 points.

• Rome seventh girls 34, Bagley 22: Kelsey Shelton scored eight points for the Lady Braves (0-5).

• Gordon Lee girls 21, Westside 17: Erin Orem led the Lady Rockets (0-1) with seven points and Sydney Snyder added five.

Gordon Lee’s Addi Taylor led all scorers with 11 points.

MS wrestling

• Host Bagley took first place in a nine-team field to win the Murray County Junior Invitational, racking up 253 points over Heritage (224), Ringgold (205), Gladden (164) and Calhoun (133).

The Braves had four wrestlers with three wins by pin, including Jonathan Dunn (86 pounds), Aaron Granger (108), Damien Green (140) and Colton Johnson (220).

Blane Anderson (275) had two wins and two pins for Bagley, while Gladden’s Clay Thornbury (165) had three wins, including one by pin.
