Column: Breaking news: Matches are scripted

Here are the news and notes from the pro wrestling world:

• WWE CEO Linda McMahon has revealed the worst-kept secrets in wrestling.

McMahon, speaking at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York City, told an audience attending a press conference there that matches are scripted and winners of matches are pre-determined. Since News Corp. no-showed the conference, WWE replaced the company with a presentation of its own.

“Television stories, for those of you who don’t know, are scripted,” McMahon told the group of investors and media.

• Former WWE diva Trish Stratus may return to the company.

• Who was the best wrestler in 2008? We’ll present awards for 2008 at the end of the month. One of the categories is “Fan’s Choice for Wrestler of the Year.” There is no criteria for the award, just your humble opinion. The Local Corner: Mikey Watkins probably feels like he’s missing something. Last week at TWA, Watkins challenged the Sheepherders to a match with some interesting stipulations. If Watkins won, the Sheepherders would leave the organization. But if Watkins lost, the Sheepherders would win his valet for two weeks. Watkins had the advantage in the match until he handcuffed Frankie Frank to the ropes and repeatedly hit him with a leather strap. That caused the referee to disqualify Watkins and lose his valet.

Saturday night, there will be a ladder match for the Southern title.

In matches last Friday night: Talon defeated Billy J; Bane beat Destiny; Johnny Rokk topped Drake; Drew Meyers turned back Dino Dupree and Roger Foster; Toy Dotson and Tyler Sutton went to a time limit draw; Jake Murphy and Alex Summers won a fatal four-way to win the tag team belts.

TWA runs Fridays at 8 p.m. in the TWA Arena off Reed Road in north Whitfield County, about three miles north of the bypass. The Action Zone runs Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are free. Any military member with proper identification will be admitted free.
