Residents can help choose state's new Feline Friend license plate

Submitted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture

The Georgia Department of Agriculture needs you to help choose the state’s new Feline Friend license plate. Log onto www.fixgeorgiacats.org and vote for your favorite design.

The tag design with the most votes by Sept. 8, 2008 will be featured on the new license plate. Out of almost 200 entries from all over the country, the top six pieces were chosen that best represented a variety of media and ideas. The contest and ultimately the final license plate are part of a funding initiative to benefit the Dog and Cat Sterilization Program (DCSP). Please keep in mind the following tips when voting:

• Only one vote per computer will be tallied

• Please rate each design on the given scale

• Cast your vote online at www.fixgeorgiacats.org from Aug. 22 – Sept. 8, 2008

• You may also cast your vote via mail:

Cat License Plate Art Contest

19 Martin Luther King Jr. SW, Room 106

Atlanta, GA 30334

The winning art will be featured on the new Feline Friend License Plate, which will be sold in addition to the current designs beginning in December 2008. The Dog and Cat License Plates currently are the primary funding source for the Dog and Cat Sterilization Program. This innovative program provides subsidies for spay/neuter procedures performed by licensed and accredited veterinarians in all 159 Georgia counties. More than 35,000 spay/neuter procedures have been performed since 2003 through the DCSP.

Unlike other spay/neuter programs, the Dog and Cat Sterilization Program has no participation income requirements. All Georgia residents may benefit from spay/neuter subsidies granted by the DCSP. Interested residents should contact their local veterinarians to confirm program participation or call the Department at (404) 656-3667 or visit www.agr.state.ga.us for more information.

Since this program receives no state monies, it depends on public and private donations to perform its vital mission of curbing pet overpopulation in the Peach State. Georgians may support the program by purchasing a current Dog and Cat License Plate for their vehicles. These commemorative license plates are available at county tag offices throughout Georgia for a $25 one-time fee. More than $22 from each license plate sold directly benefits the DCSP. These funds are allocated only for spay/neuter procedures and educational outreach on this healthy choice. Tens of thousands of Dog and Cat License Plates have been sold since 2003, earning more than $2.5 million of earmarked funding for spay/neuter procedures and educational outreach on this healthy choice. Georgians may also contribute to the DCSP in honor or memory of a loved one or donate on their state income tax form. Contributions are 100 percent tax-deductible and provide much-needed funding to promote critical spay/neuter efforts.
