WEATHER UPDATE: Many roads closed

Several roads in Whitfield and Murray counties have high water on them following Sunday afternoon’s heavy rain showers, 911 operators in both counties said.

In Whitfield County, all major roads are clear, the operator said. But several of the secondary roads have high water, including Landfill Road, Temple Road and Old Fields Road.

There have been some downed trees, he said.

In Murray County, several roads have high water, including Browns Bridge at Fox Bridge, Norton Bridge Road, Prince Beam Road, Bagley Road, and North Holly Drive. In the Chatsworth city limits, roads with high water include Cotton Circle, Wheat Street, Sixth Avenue, Ross Avenue, Cohutta Street, Cantral Street and Third Avenue at Locust Street.

If there are signs indicating the road is closed because of high water, do not go around them and try to go through the water, the operator said in Murray.

Also, the bridge at the county line on Ga. Highway 2 is still out while work is being done there, she said. The electronic sign at the county line on Ga. Highway 2 indicating the bridge is out is not working, and other signs keep blowing over in the high wind.

Both counties are also under a flood watch until 10 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall is expected to be between 1 and 3 inches. A watch means there is a potential for flooding.

Both counties remain under a high wind advisory until 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. A wind advisory means there are sustained winds of at least 20 mph and gusts of 35 mph. A high wind warning expired for the area at 3 p.m. today.
