The Georgia Board of Education on Tuesday gave local school districts flexibility this school year in adhering to a rule that implies teachers must work and be paid for at least 190 days.
It allows Whitfield County Schools to implement a plan to furlough employees a total of two days in August and October. The furloughs are in response to additional state budget cuts and a request from Gov. Sonny Perdue to give unpaid time off to teachers to cope with the state’s budget shortfall.
“ThestateschoolboarddidnotapproveawaiverforWhitfieldCountySchools, but allowed flexibility regarding a state rule defining the school year for certified staff,” said school system spokesman Eric Beavers.
