Identity theft suspect arrested

A woman sought for questioning about identity theft by the Dalton Police Department, Murray County Sheriff’s Office and Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office was arrested by Gordon County authorities in Calhoun.

Sharon Kay Hoisington, 47, of 100 Brittany Drive in Perry, was charged Monday by the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office with 12 counts of identity fraud and two counts of theft by receiving stolen property. She is also the subject of investigations by the Calhoun Police Department, Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and the Cartersville Police Department.

In June, sheriff’s detectives in Gordon County received a number of reports regarding identity theft and fraudulent activities involving a then-unidentified woman believed to have been cashing stolen checks at local banks. The detectives were especially frustrated by the fact that security cameras seemed to fail to capture the woman’s likeness or a complete license plate number.

On Monday, a detective was on U.S. Highway 41 in Calhoun returning to the sheriff’s office after following a lead on the case when he saw the suspect driving a purple Jeep near I-75 and U.S. 41. He attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver fled onto the interstate. Officers were called and “boxed in” the suspect’s vehicle and safely forced it from the roadway.

Detectives executed a search warrant for the Jeep and removed several bags of documents and other evidence. Hoisington remained in the Gordon County Jail Thursday afternoon. A spokesman said she will likely have a bond hearing before a magistrate judge today.
