Murray golfers pocket two at Spring Lakes

Prep Roundup

From Staff Reports
Dalton Daily Citizen

Murray County won a pair of tri-meets with Gilmer County and Southeast and earned low medalist honors in boys and girls competition on Monday at Spring Lakes Golf Course.

Murray’s boys foursome shot a 173 to take the nine-hole, par-36 match, while Southeast was second with 222 and Gilmer third with 223.

The victorious Indians were led by low medalist Zach Gibson’s 42, while Caleb Lankford shot a 43. Tyler Simpson, Dylan Lankford and Jeff Cole each carded a 44, with Simpson and Lankford — first off the course — turning in the final two counting scores.

Randy York’s 49 led Southeast, while Zach Davis (50), Josh Wilson (60) and Chaz Smith (63) rounded out the team score as the Raiders fell to 2-3 this season.

In the girls match, the Lady Indians won with a 103 as Alicia Moneymaker’s 44 was good for low medalist and Emily Parrish turned in a 59, while Southeast was second with a 112 and Gilmer was third at 124.

Freshmen Katie Burke (53) and Tallie Williams (59) turned in the counting scores for the Lady Raiders, who are now 3-3.

Varsity soccer

Christian Heritage 3, Pinecrest Academy 3, OT: David Greene set up Taylor Gray twice for equalizing scores in the second half in Cumming, but the Lions failed to convert in overtime, despite having two shots on goal to none during the two five-minute periods.

The GISA Region 4-2A game was tied at 1 at halftime, with Christian Heritage’s other goal coming on Josafat Rodriguez’s unassisted direct kick from 25 yards out. The Lions were outshot 10-9 for the game, but Brady Seehorn had eight saves in goal and senior Felipe Gonzalez made strong contributions from his center midfielder spot, Christian Heritage coach John Seehorn said.

Campbell 3, Murray County 1: The Indians tied the game early in the second half when Rafael Pacheco converted a penalty, but the Spartans responded with a corner kick goal and Murray County suffered an own goal to fall to 4-4 and 1-3 in Region 5-5A. The Lady Indians also lost 3-1.

Varsity tennis

Northwest girls 4, Rome 1: The Lady Bruins (8-1 overall, 5-1 in Region 7-4A) were led by a singles sweep from No. 1 Lauren Morgan (6-4, 6-0), No. 2 Adrienne Orem (7-6, 6-0) and No. 3 Kelsey Harmon (6-1, 6-2), plus a doubles victory by No. 2 Lindsey Denton and Ashley Miles (6-4, 6-4).

Rome boys 3, Northwest 2: The Bruins (8-1, 5-1) lost their perfect record in 7-4A, but remain in position to earn a No. 2 seed for the postseason tournament with one regular season region match remaining. Northwest got wins from No. 3 singles player Jonathan LaVelle (6-3, 6-3) and the No. 1 doubles team of Josh Ellison and Matt Bailey (7-5, 6-0).

Northwest’s boys and girls finish the region schedule on Thursday against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.

Dalton girls 5, Ridgeland 0: The Lady Catamounts (7-0, 6-0) remained perfect by claiming the makeup match in Region 7-4A competition, dropping just one game, and are a victory shy of finishing the regular season with an unblemished region mark.

In singles, Dalton’s wins came from No. 1 Jennifer Enck (6-0, 6-1), No. 2 Emily Harbin (6-0, 6-0) and No. 3 Lawrence Crutchfield (6-0, 6-0). Ridgeland forfeited doubles play to No. 1 Allyson Pao and Priya Naik and No. 2 Audrey Puryear and Julie Kinsey.

Dalton’s final region match for both boys and girls is another makeup, with Southeast visiting at 4 p.m. on March 26.

Dalton boys 5, Ridgeland 0: The Cats (3-4, 3-3) won with little trouble to even their region record and remain in the hunt for a top four seed entering next month’s region tourney via a complete sweep in singles action — No. 1 Sam Awad, No. 2 Blake Garrett and No. 3 Price Puryear each won 6-0, 6-0.
