Gordon firefighters get new radios

By Elizabeth Crumbly, Calhoun Times

The Gordon County fire department received 20 Motorola portable radios from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Tuesday, April 14. A Firehouse Subs press release says the radios, valued at $17,7000, “combine two-way radio with digital technology and double the number of users who can be supported at a single time.”

Gordon County Fire Chief David Hawkins said the radios can be used anywhere — they will not set off a spark in an “explosive atmosphere;” at a few local plants and facilities, the old radios could not be used.

The department now needs nine more radios to outfit all the department’s paid firefighters, he said. According to the release, the funds for the donation came from several Firehouse Subs programs run in the restaurants.

“We are incredibly appreciative to our community for their ongoing support and for their donations to our business, as well as the Public Safety Foundation,” said Joel Dennis, Firehouse Subs of Rome franchise owner.

“We feel … fortunate to be able to present these portable radios to the Gordon County Fire Department, which will better help them serve and protect our community.”
