Mohawk eliminating jobs at Armuchee

Job cuts continue at Calhoun-based Mohawk Industries as the company will close tufting operations at its Armuchee plant and lay off 158 workers.

Officials with Mohawk Industries said Tuesday the company will shutter its carpet finishing operations at the company’s Green Street facility in Dalton, resulting in 68 job cuts.

Company officials said they would offer employees at both plants “available” jobs at other facilities.

Joey Faircloth, Mohawk’s vice president of residential manufacturing, referred questions about the job cuts to company spokesman Robert Webb. Webb did not immediately return a phone message on Wednesday.

Armuchee is about 10 miles north of Rome.

Last fall, the three major U.S. floorcovering manufacturers — Dalton-based Beaulieu Group, Mohawk and Dalton-based Shaw Industries — laid off nearly 1,000 total employees in five plants in Alabama and Georgia.

Mohawk has more than 35,000 employees and had sales of $7.58 billion in 2007.
