The billionaire bought out the billionaire. Donald Trump re-entered the WWE spotlight this week by purchasing Monday night “Raw” from owner Vince McMahon.
For the record, Trump didn’t actually buy “Raw.” It’s part of a storyline. But that didn’t stop WWE from issuing a trumped-up press release on its Web site, wwe.com. The “transaction” puts WWE in an interesting predicament. Since the company is publicly-owned, this sort of fake news could catch the eye of the Securities and Exchange Commission and put investors on edge, adversely affecting WWE’s stock. McMahon surely hopes the “sale” affects WWE’s stock by driving the value up.
Trump broke the news during a painfully taped interview that WWE tried to pass off as live. He promised huge changes for the organization.
So what radical alterations did Trump make?
The best he could muster was a commercial-free “Raw” on Monday. Weak.
“The Donald” will make his triumphant return to the program. Watch for him to name Ric Flair as the show’s general manager.
Although Trump’s appearance at Wrestlemania 24 caused a media stir, the latest news didn’t register as soundly with the mainstream media. The bigger question? Will Trump resonate with wrestling fans.
WWE officials were silent about the release of former superstar Umaga (Edward Fatu) earlier this month. A quick visit to WWE’s corporate Web site (corporate.wwe.com) revealed the reason for Umaga’s dismissal.
From a company press release: “... it should be noted that Umaga’s termination was due to his second violation of the WWE Wellness Program and his subsequent refusal to attend a rehabilitation facility.”
The Local Corner: Mad Jack will spend some quality time with TWA owner Doug Watkins on Saturday night. The Sheepherders, managed by Mad Jack, will defend their tag team titles against J.L. Cool and Crazy. There’s no time limit, no disqualification. And to make sure Mad Jack doesn’t interfere, he will be handcuffed to Watkins.
TWA runs Fridays at 8 p.m. in the TWA Arena off Reed Rd. in Whitfield County, about three miles north of the bypass. The Action Zone runs Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are free. Any military member with proper identification will be admitted free.
Trivia Teaser: Whose corner was Donald Trump in during Wrestlemania 23? (Side note: Umaga headlined the main event against this budding star).
Check back next week for the answer.
Last week’s question: What city is the Road Warriors’ hometown?
Chicago.
