Broken arm healed, Davis back on track

After missing last season with the Dalton Dolphins swim team, Rebecca Davis is back in the pool and winning again.
Just like she did before.
Davis, a 15-year-old veteran of six summers with the Dolphins, was sidelined in 2008 due to surgery on her oft-broken left arm. The last break was “set wrong” and surgery was required to correct the problem, Davis said before Thursday’s Chattanooga Area Swim League meet against Ringgold at Dalton High’s pool.
“I swam the entire high school season and got in a lot of practice,” said Davis, who will be a sophomore at Dalton in the fall. “I’ve been placing high in our (summer) meets so far and everything is going well.”
Davis’ summer specialty is the 50-yard breaststroke and she’s won the event in all three CASL meets thus far, helping the Dolphins to a 2-1 record. In a season-opening win over Hamilton Club, Davis scored a maximum 19 points and followed that up with a 12-point effort in a loss to the Cleveland Aqua Tigers.
On Thursday, Davis won the event in 34.21 seconds, which coach Charles Todd said was her fastest time this summer, and helped the Dolphins defeat Ringgold 385-380. Davis finished the meet with 17 points.
“Rebecca was the most outstanding freshman on our high school team,” said Todd, the Dalton High and Dolphins coach. “She’s getting stronger every day and is one of our emerging leaders with the Dolphins. She’s been with the Dolphins for many moons and her mom (Olga) is one of our coaches.”
The long scar on her left forearm indicates Davis has made a strong comeback from surgery that left her high and dry last summer.
“I was a little nervous in my first swim after the surgery,” she said. “I was concerned about not getting back to where I was or being as fast as before,” said Davis, moments before jumping into the pool for Thursday’s warmups. “There was a little soreness during the high school season, but I’m about 95 percent right now. It’s not bothering me at all.”
Todd believes Davis is nearing her old form and should have a strong summer season.
“She’s missed time because of the arm injury, so I’d like to see her make some more double workouts year-round to make herself an even stronger competitor. She’s strong in the breaststroke and I’d like for her to beef that up for the 100 and 200 (breaststroke) for USA Swimming.”
In Thursday’s meet, Ethan Young paced the Dolphins with 19 points and the boys and girls 11-12 relay teams posted wins to seal the victory.
“It came down to the last few relays and our 11-12 boys and girls both won while the other relay teams split,” Todd said. “The 11-12 relay wins were the difference. It makes for an exciting meet when they’re that close.”
Ethan Pence scored 18 points for the Dolphins while Taylor Dale, Davis and Joana Rosales all had 17. Caroline Mathis and Stephen Jones had 15 points while Jonathan Shaheen, Ross Valdez and Alex Mashburn added 14 apiece to the Dolphins’ score.
Chas Jones, Stephen Mulkey and Maranda Storey each scored 12 points; Romina Mendoza and Alan Trejo had 11; and Jacob Queen, Aisha Sams and Oli Valdez tallied 10.
