Dalton matmen fourth in tourney

From Staff Reports
Dalton Daily Citizen

Dalton’s wrestling Catamounts finished 2-2 and in fourth place in the Smoky Mountain Duals at Pigeon Forge, Tenn., on Tuesday.

Competing in the championship gold division, the Catamounts lost to Dutch Fork, S.C., 45-30; beat Larue, Ky., 43-30; lost to LaFayette, 45-27; and finished with a 41-39 victory over Seymour, Tenn.

“It was a good tournament,” Dalton coach Charles Mitchell said, “with a lot of good competition.”

The Cats had two wrestlers win all four matches on Tuesday — 103-pounder Eduardo Gutierrez and 125-pounder Henry Torres, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding lightweight wrestlers, Mitchell said.

Jordan White (112), Christian Washington (119), Taylor Duckworth (160) and Dean Menchaca (275) all won three of four matches.

Dalton is now 17-5 in dual meets this season. The Catamounts return to action next week at the War Eagle Classic in Marietta.

Northwest Whitfield split two matches Tuesday in Rome.

The Bruins (16-4 overall, 4-3 Area 7-4A), defeated host Rome 34-24 but loss to Cass 42-25.

Senior David Lewis (135 pounds) and sophomore Connor Hayes (145) were the only Bruins to win two matches.

“We wrestled well against Rome,” Bruins coach Allen Tucker said. “Against Cass, although the score looks like they took us behind the woodshed, we lost three overtime matches — three in a row — and two one-point matches. You talk about gut-wrenching watching those overtime matches.

“We put ourselves in position to win against Cass, which I think is the best team in the region — nobody has beaten them — but just couldn’t get it done. We’re still working, still growing.”

Summer Jackson added 14 points. Sydnee Roberts had nine steals and five assists and Emily Andrews added seven rebounds. The Lady Bruins had 40 steals in the game.

9th basketball

Murray County girls 55, North Paulding 41: The Lady Indians got 11 points from Kellie Newport and finished 3-0 in the North Paulding Christmas tournament.
