Governor signs 'Made in Georgia' bill
Submitted by the Senate Press Office
ATLANTA — Governor Sonny Perdue signed the “Made in Georgia” legislation (SB 44) authored by Sen. Ross Tolleson (R-Perry). This legislation requires state agencies to give preference to locally produced items when purchasing or contracting for supplies, materials, equipment, or agricultural products.
“People look to their state government to stimulate our local economy and maintain stability. It’s time to practice what we preach and stimulate the economy by purchasing products made in Georgia. I applaud Governor Perdue’s decision to make this law,” said Tolleson. “We are taking the first steps to help manufacturers to expand and grow and thereby increasing employment opportunities.”
Manufacturing accounts for approximately 10 percent of Georgia’s non-agricultural employment. This creates wealth for communities, employs thousands of citizens, and significantly contributes to Georgia’s economy.
Georgia is one of the most competitive states in the nation in terms of building and operating manufacturing companies. Nearly 10,000 manufacturing facilities are located in the state, providing jobs for approximately 450,000 Georgians. Georgia’s manufacturing operations include a variety of industries, such as transportation equipment, aerospace, computers and electronics, food, paper, metal fabrication, textiles, and plastics. Georgia has some of the best attributes for encouraging the development of new manufacturing companies. These include low labor costs, a good business climate, and an international airport.
