First Georgia Banking Co. adds two to board of directors

First Georgia Banking Co. at 1378 Dug Gap Road has added Phil Neff and Maurice Sponcler to its board of directors.

Neff, a native of Huntington, W.V., graduated from Marshall University in 1971 with a degree in business management/marketing. He founded Cycle-Tex, Inc. in 1988.

Neff helped to start Christian Heritage School in 1986. He is the past chairman of the Whitfield County Republican Party, an assistant treasurer of Georgia Republican Party, a Georgia state delegate to the Republican National Convention in New Orleans and San Diego. He is an appointed member of the Dalton-Whitfield Economic Development Authority board. He attends Evangelical Methodist Church and served on the Board of Stewarts.

He and his wife, Karen Connell Bunting Neff, have been married since 1963. They have two grown children, Rebecca and John Phillips.

Sponcler, a native of Newnan, graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law 1967. He is a senior partner in the law firm of Sponcler & Tharpe in Dalton.

He has served as president of the Dalton Rotary Club, chairman of the advisory board of directors of the Salvation Army, chairman of the Dalton-Whitfield Hospital Authority and trustee of the Hospital Healthcare Foundation and president of the Dalton Whitfield Chamber of Commerce. He was previously a member of the board of directors of Regions Bank and Dalton-Whitfield Bank. He is an active member of the Dalton Rotary Club and First Presbyterian Church where he serves on the staff committee and recently served on the pastor nominating committee. He was active in the Sunday school program as a teacher of the senior high for more than 25 years.

He and his wife, Betty Bowen Sponcler, have been married since 1969. They have two grown children, Dr. Lisa S. Norman and Doris S. Jones.
