Spector’s defection

Dalton Daily Citizen

It will be up to the voters of Pennsylvania to decide his fate in 2010, but the defection of Arlen Specter to the Democratic Party has infuriated many Republicans. It’s also left a few leery Democrats shaking their heads.

Granted, Specter was never a favorite of either conservative Republicans or the party establishment. He was always looked at as an unreliable vote, even on issues most Republicans considered crucial. To placate the mercurial and legendarily prickly senator, the Republican leadership bent over backwards to keep him happy. But with Specter, it wasn’t enough.

Right now Republicans don’t seem to matter much in Washington, so what better time to come to the sudden realization that he wasn’t “comfortable” in the GOP.

Democrats made a show of welcoming their newest pal, but Specter’s reputation proceeds him. It may be that his road-to-Damascus conversion might lessen his impact in Washington.

Wouldn’t that be sweet?
