Position to fill

Dalton Daily Citizen

U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal plans to run for governor. That’s interesting enough, as the veteran lawmaker should be a formidable challenger in what will be a crowded field.

But his absence from Congress throws open a congressional seat sure to attract an array of aspirants. The 10th District, which stretches from Dade to Hall counties, has been a Republican enclave for more than a decade. It will surely draw a flock of GOP challengers. North Georgia Democrats, buoyed by the 2008 elections, could put forward their best challenger in years, making for an interesting political dogfight.

So, will Whitfield and Murray counties produce a challenger for the position?

We hope so.

Whitfield and Murray have long been of vital importance to the region’s economy and we remain at the heart of North Georgia’s transportation and industrial infrastructure.

There is no reason why a candidate from here can’t represent the district effectively.

Some names are already being bandied and hopefully, as the process unfolds, a strong local candidate (or candidates) will emerge.
