Citizen of the Week: Sheila Brooks

Volunteers who are enthusiastic year after year can be hard to come by. When Sheila Brooks showed up at the United Way office about five years ago, however, it didn’t take long for officials to realize they had a gem.

Brooks comes in at least twice a week without fail to help answer the 211 help line. This year she decided that wasn’t enough and offered to assist with distribution for the Toys for Tots. Her responsibilities include helping coordinate who gets toys and entering all the data into the United Way’s database.

“She’s one of our long-time volunteers,” said volunteer center assistant Kyle Coffey. “Sometimes we have volunteers who are passionate about something but then we never see them again. For a volunteer to stick around is outstanding and especially agree to answer phone calls. We’re having our highest call volume of the year right now.”

“She’s wonderful,” said Margaret Zeisig, director of community solutions. “This time of year it’s always good to have volunteers pitch in and help. She does an excellent job and she brightens up our office. She’s always happy and cheerful and has a great smile.”

For her assistance with those in the community who are less fortunate, The Daily Citizen names Sheila Brooks as Citizen of the Week.
